Castaway Chic in the Maldives – Kanuhura Resort

Set in the warm Indian Ocean, in the middle of bright Maldivian atolls, sits the amazing Kanuhura, a Sun Resort, Maldives. If you are looking for laidback island living look no further than this Small Luxury Hotel of the World with its ‘castaway chic’ experience.

Upon arrival at Male International Airport, you are personally greeted by a member of the Kanuhura concierge team who will direct you to the Kanuhura private lounge and assist you with seaplane and resort check-in. Complimentary snacks and drinks are provided whilst awaiting your seaplane departure.

Boarding the seaplane, you embark on a 40-minute spectacular transfer, flying over crystal blue waters dotted with tiny islands – a true paradise from above.

Highlights of Barcelona

When it comes to city breaks it’s hard to choose which one to visit next!. On a recent trip to Barcelona, I found that it’s not like any other city. There are a whole host of attractions to enjoy, the architecture is second to none, the food is exquisite, and it even has its very own golden sandy beach. There really is something exciting to discover around every corner and impossible to run out of things to do.

Attractions

Renowned for its Gaudi inspired architecture and the ongoing build of the world’s largest cathedral, the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona really is a delight for the eyes. A highlight for me was a visit to Park Guell, this consists of beautiful gardens & pathways leading to mosaic statues & buildings again built by Gaudi. Its location also boasts fantastic views over the entire city. Believe it or not, Barcelona also boasts an Arc de Triomf which is the gateway to a huge leafy park called Ciutadella Park, also home to the famous Barcelona Zoo. On top of all this, there is a museum at every turn plus the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter give a sense of Barcelona’s historic past. This list of attractions just goes on & on and there is something to suit everyone’s taste including the famous Barcelona football stadium Nou Camp.

Food

When you think of Spanish food you automatically think of tapas & paella. As well as these delicious delights being served up in sunny cafés located in one of Barcelona’s many pretty outdoor plazas, I also stumbled upon ‘Pintxos’. These are small indoor bars with canapé like snacks lined up along the counter – a concept which originated in the Basque Country. These snacks consist of delights like salmon & cream cheese, serrano ham & sundried tomato and roasted vegetables on slices of baguette held together by a cocktail stick. It works by grabbing a plate and picking as many pintxos as you like, accompanied by a drink. Once you have finished, take your plate to the counter where the cocktail sticks are counted, and you’re charged accordingly. This proved a great way to try out some of the local produce in smaller portions and a very ‘honest’ way to dine.

Beach

After a long few days of walking around the city & soaking in the fantastic sights, what better way to relax by heading to the beach. The soft golden sand beach is walkable from the city centre and offers many bars & restaurants to refresh and relax with a cool drink. It gave off a very chilled vibe with people chilling on their beach blankets whilst others were cooling down from the afternoon heat by taking a dip into the gentle blue Mediterranean Sea.

Next time you’re thinking of booking a short break choose Barcelona for a trip with a difference and a City with so much to offer – you will not be disappointed!

Athens and More

Make the most of Greece’s historical sites and beautiful beaches with a two-centre holiday – combine Athens with one of the lesser-known islands such as Aegina, Poros or Hydra.

Virtually everywhere you go in Athens you will find ancient temples and impressive monuments, the most famous of course being the Acropolis and tread in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks as you explore the Parthenon. Located in the centre of the city is the Temple of Zeus, the largest temple in Greece. Stroll around the National Gardens, then on to the famous Syntagma Square where you can see the Presidential Guard in full dress uniform. A short walk from here is Plaka, one of Athens’ oldest neighbourhoods, with beautiful buildings, churches, archaeological sites, cafes and tavernas.

After soaking up the culture take a short ferry ride to Aegina, the port is lined with shops, cafes and bars. This pretty island has several sandy beaches, picturesque fishing villages and the Ancient Temple of Athena Aphaia.

Alternatively, sail over to Poros, as you arrive into port you can’t fail to be impressed by the pretty hillside town. Although only a small island, there are several beaches with crystal clear waters. In Poros town, you can wander around the narrow streets and relax with a drink or meal on the waterfront.

Relax on the picturesque island of Hydra. Transport here is a little different – no motor vehicles are allowed – getting around is by foot, boat or donkey! The town is full of beautiful old mansions spread up the hillside and unspoilt by modern architecture. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants where you can relax and watch the amazing sunsets. Some of the beaches are within walking distance of Hydra town or you can enjoy a boat trip to some of the more secluded coves.

With so many fantastic destinations on our doorstep, why not take the hassle out of holidaying and take a trip within the UK this year. From the tranquil lochs and highlands of Scotland to the quaint coastal villages of Cornwall and everything that’s in-between, there’s a destination for everyone.

#1 Stress-Free Travelling

Enjoy the ease of just jumping in your car and driving to your holiday destination. With no mad panic to get to the Airport on time, no lengthy check-in or security queues to wait in, no waiting around looking at the board to see if the gate is open yet, and no waiting for other people to board the coach to take you to your resort.

Simply load the car up and within a few hours (or less) you could be arriving at a glorious sandy beach fringed by British seaside shops filled with souvenirs, with the smell of fish & chips in the air. Marvellous Mauritius – something for everyone

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, its roughly 12 hours flying time from the UK with direct flights available most days with Air Mauritius and British Airways, and daily indirect flights via Dubai with Emirates.

Destination Spotlight: A different side of Mallorca

It’s not all sun, sea and sangria – the north and west coasts of Mallorca are home to sandy beaches, majestic mountains and sheer cliffs offering excellent walking, mountain biking and cycling holidays.

The pretty town of Soller can be reached by a vintage train from Palma, journeying through the almond and citrus groves and the stunning Tramuntana Mountains. Here you can hike along the many trails into the mountains or along the coastal paths. Cycling is also a very popular way of exploring this region. Alternatively, take the tram to Port Soller and relax on the beach, or enjoy lunch at one the many cafes along the promenade.

Tucked between two hills, lies the enchanting town of Pollenca, wander around the narrow streets lined with ancient blonde stone architecture, climb the 365 steps which lead to Calvari church and at the top, you are rewarded with beautiful views of the bay of Pollenca. Afterwards, enjoy a well-deserved drink or lunch in one of the many cafes surrounding the traditional main square.

Set on dramatic rocks and rugged cliffs is the small village of Cala de Sant Vicenc, here you will find several beautiful sandy coves where you can cool off in the clear blue sea – an ideal spot for snorkelling.

A drive around hairpin bends to Cap de Formentor is a must, with stunning views from the top of the rugged cliffs, continuing down through the forests it is worth a stop at Cala Formentor where the pine trees stretch down to the fine white sand and crystal clear turquoise sea.

After all that exercise and sightseeing, why not spend a few days relaxing in the pretty town of Puerto Pollenca. Take a stroll along the Pine Walk promenade, lined with impressive villas on one side and gently lapping waves on the other. Heading the opposite way from the marina is the long, wide sandy beach stretching almost to Alcudia, with cafes, restaurants and bars lining the pedestrianised promenade. Puerto Pollenca offers a wide range of accommodation from apartments to hotels and plenty of holiday villas.

Destination Spotlight March: Perth and Western Australia

Destina Travel’s very own Elaine Cox was able to explore Perth and the wider Southern Western Australia on a recent familiarisation trip, where she had a brilliant time visiting some amazing places. Here are a few reasons why we think this region is a fantastic holiday destination as well as some of Elaine’s personal experiences from her recent trip…

Perth

Perth is a relatively easy city to navigate around, with free buses available and guided excursions to take visitors further afield. For more nature filled experiences visitors to Perth can experience bike rides along the Swan River or a visit to South Perth Zoo! Perth is also home to many inner-city parks – The biggest being Kings Park providing perfect scenery for a sunny Segway Tour. Combining bushland and ornamental gardens, Kings Park is great for walking, cycling or a picnic with wonderful views over the city skyline and Swan River.

Whilst in Perth, Elaine took a trip to Rottnest Island, where she explored the area by bicycle, if cycling isn’t for you, there are minibuses or guided walking tours to take you around. This stunning island is home to Quokkas (a small marsupial which appears to be smiling and known as the happiest animal on earth!) With its many beautiful white sand beaches and clear blue sea, it is a great place for snorkelling and a definite ‘must do’.

Mounts Bay Waters Apartments sits a short walk away from Elizabeth Quay and Perth city centre. This apartment-hotel features all of the services and facilities of a hotel but with the added convenience and space of a fully self-contained and furnished apartment in Perth. Fremantle

This laid-back beach resort has a wide range of cool cafes and boho bars providing a chilled out atmosphere to enjoy lunch or an afternoon drink whilst soaking up the Fremantle vibe. The Esplanades Rydges Hotel, Fremantle is a lovely colonial style property close to the harbour and town centre.

Fancy Swimming with wild Dolphins? Just under 40 minutes from Fremantle is Rockingham where you can book an excursion on board the Apollo 3. All the equipment is provided and there is a 99% chance of seeing dolphins on every trip. Elaine was very lucky as several dolphins decided they would like to come and play – swimming around and underneath the boat whilst showing off their jumping skills in the waves!

Margaret River Region

Margaret River is recognised as one of the world’s top class wine regions. The private country house hotel, Cape Lodge is a great choice and the ideal base for exploring this area. Surrounded by manicured gardens, this beautiful property sits within its own vineyard, producing fine wines just for their guests.

The nearby Ngilgi caves are well worth a visit, your Aboriginal guide will take you through the caves explaining the rich history and describing the legends of his ancestors. From here why not continue your day with a visit to the Bootleg Brewery. Here you can sample the locally brewed beers and ales to accompany your lunch.

If you like the thrill of the surf, Yallingup beach has one of the best beach breaks in Australia. Seashells Yallingup resort is set within the beautiful gardens of the heritage-listed Caves House Hotel and Yallingup Beach is just a 10-minute stroll away. From here you can also visit Leeuwin Lighthouse, the most south-westerly point of Australia. Cape Leeuwin is also the point where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. It’s also one of the best land-based vantage points for spotting whales from May to September.

The attractions you need to see in Disneyland Paris

One of our business travel consultants for our corporate travel agency Good Travel Management recently returned from a wonderful trip to Paris. Visiting both Disneyland Parks, Lisa and her husband were apprehensive about a Disney Adventure at first, with their daughter being just 2, they weren’t sure if she would be too young.

Looking into this further and seeking advice from one of the team here at Destina, Lisa found it to be the perfect time and age to take her daughter. Not only do under 3’s receive free entry into Disneyland Paris itself, but she was still able to go on most of the rides too!

There is plenty to see and do in Disneyland Paris and Lisa wanted to experience as much as she could on her family holiday, here are her favourites:

#1 The Iconic Castle

The Sleeping Beauty Castle is one of the most iconic Disney attractions and a real dream come true for all who visit. Boasting soaring spires, turrets, stained glass windows, regal rooftops and tapestries, this 167-foot high spectacular invokes pure magic, as well as giving a nod to classical French architecture. We were all in awe of the castle, taking home many snaps of us in front of the square trees!

#2 Fantasyland

An enchanting world awaits you in Fantasyland. It’s perfect for Under 5’s and situated in the heart of the Disneyland park, here our fairy tales came to life. We discovered Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs took a trip on Peter Pan’s flight and rode along with Dumbo as he took us high in the air, celebrating different cultures from around the world.

My daughter is a massive Alice in Wonderland fan so we absolutely had to visit Alice’s Curious Labyrinth! It was a fantastic experience and we even took a ride on the Mad Hatters teacups before making our way to meet the characters.

#3 Parades and Lightshow

The Disneyland Parades are renowned all over the world and at Disneyland Paris, there are 5 areas to see them from ( list here )

We saw the parade on both days and it was amazing! There’s so much work that goes into its creation, the floats were fantastic and the cast members were just magical.

At night when it gets dark and the park closes, there is a spectacular firework display and light show that runs every night and is a must see. The show itself is situated around the castle and the fireworks light up the sky. The show lasts about 20 mins, just remember to wrap up warm in the winter as it can get very cold.

Lisa’s Top Tips for surviving Disneyland Paris with a toddler :

#1 Take snacks – I packed a box with both healthy snacks and sweet treats to keep my daughter amused in the queues.

#2 Sticking to a budget? Then pack a lunch! Anyone with a fussy toddler will know how painful it is to purchase food that’s expensive and them not eat it.

#3 Take entertainment for the queues – Patience and queuing are not normally toddler strong points so I took a backpack with an IPad, some small toys, mini colouring books and stickers.

#4 Take or hire a pushchair. – It’s a lot of walking for adults (wear your trainers!) meaning those with little legs will tire easily. Another tip would be to take a bike lock for pushchairs to avoid the unhappy mishap of a lost or stolen pushchair.

#5 Research which attractions, shows and characters you want to experience. Disneyland Paris is so big it can be overwhelming trying to work out where to go and what to do upon arrival. The parades, shows and the firework display are out of this world so forward planning of the best times as well as where to stand means you get the best possible view and experience!

Olivia’s Icelandic Adventure – 5 of the best excursions in Iceland.

Olivia, one of the Business Travel Consultants from our corporate travel agency Good Travel Management, was lucky to have the opportunity to go to Iceland on an educational trip. With many activities and adventures lined up for her 4 days stay in Reykjavik, we thought it would be good to share her experience along with 5 of the best excursions to undertake in Iceland.

Olivia stayed in the Icelandair Marina hotel, part of a hotel chain sponsored by Airline – Icelandair. The hotel is in a great location, borderline to the town centre with restaurants dotted all around the hotel and shops within walking distance. It is said that a variety of celebrities have stayed in this hotel including Justin Bieber! We can definitely see why as the hotel was cosy and made you feel right at home. She had a comfortable bedroom of perfect sizing with plenty of extra amenities at her disposal; a small gym, meeting rooms and a cinema room.

#1 Blue Lagoon – 45-minute transfer

The blue lagoon was Olivia’s first hot springs experience, it was so relaxing and looked exactly like it did in pictures. There’s a bar, complete with a facial mask shop in the lagoon itself which is really creative. One concern Olivia had was arriving and it being too busy, but although it was a popular attraction, it was spacious and bigger than you’d expect. You’re given a towel and a locker and but depending on the package bought you could be entitled to more.

#2 Northern Lights – 1 hour 30 minutes transfer

This excursion is one not to miss! The Northern Lights have always been a popular attraction with them being so rare (seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed as the conditions have to be perfect) Categorised as one of the 7 wonders of the world, this tour was with the Reykjavik excursions via a coach where the crowds to congregate to see the splendour. When they appeared, Olivia said she was speechless at how powerful the colours were and how they danced around, coming and going they were the best thing she has ever seen and would highly recommend.

Top Tip – When wanting to take pictures, either 1. Take pictures with a professional camera or 2. Download the northern lights camera app as a phone’s camera does not pick them up.

#3 Snowmobiling – 1-hour transfer

The excursion Olivia did was with the Mountaineers of Iceland, who advised to dress accordingly as you will be travelling to the second biggest glacier in Iceland where the temperature drops as soon you get to a higher altitude. In preparation at the site, you do get given a helmet and a snowsuit with other cosy items to stay warm.

Before taking this excursion, ensure you have a full driving license with you to be able to drive the snowmobile, for younger participants they would need to travel with a guardian or instructor. This excursion is adventurous and allows all participants to learn something new. A must see for all as it is rare you’re going to be driving a snowmobile in these conditions.

#4 Lava Tunnel – 45-minute transfer

The tour was booked via Reykjavik Excursions and is another one to tick off your list of things to see and do in Iceland.

Iceland has been known for its volcanoes and lava fields but most importantly that great ash cloud caused by mount Hekla which you indeed can drive past. Most of the volcanoes are inactive or are being studied for activity. However, with Icelandic lava fields come lava tunnels, and this informative tour helps you learn about the history of Iceland’s volcanoes, including how the lava tunnels were formed. The lava tunnel tour comes in two packages; a standard tour which cuts of at a certain point of the tunnel and the second tour is more extreme, involving a lot of climbing and going deeper into the tunnel.

#5 Golden Circle – 30-minute transfer

A fantastic place to take Instagram worthy pictures of Iceland’s natural environment. This scenic tour is made up of several stops. A grand national park made up of waterfalls, lakes, historical background and mini volcanoes await you. The real stars of the show and the highlight of this tour is most definitely the waterfall Gullfoss and the mini volcanoes. Gullfoss was the first waterfall Olivia had ever seen, and it blew her away.

Insider Tip – Wait to see the mini volcanoes erupt (only water) but are a fun waiting game all the same!

Outstanding Oman Abi’s Arabian Adventure

Abi, Head of leisure travel for Destina was fortunate to experience a trip to Oman with the Inspiring Travel Company. Here she provides us with a rundown of her Arabian adventure, as well as a few reasons why Oman should be your next holiday destination…

After a comfortable 7-hour 30-minute overnight flight from Heathrow, we arrived into Muscat airport and were efficiently met by our ground handlers who whisked us to a private lounge area to organise our visa on arrival (approx. US$50) and complete immigration.

With airport formalities all complete, we transferred to our first stop for 2 nights, the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa , a beach property located just a 15-minute drive from the capital of Muscat. The resort consists of 3 hotels, Al Waha, a children’s paradise with great facilities for families, Al Bandar, a lovely mid-luxury property in the middle of the complex and finally the palatial adult only Al Husn. We stayed our first night at Al Bandar and our second night at Al Husn.

Whilst staying at the Shangri-La we embarked an early morning boat ride from the resort’s own marina, this 3-hour experience took us to just a few kilometres from Muscat’s rugged coast in search for Dolphins. We were lucky enough to see many wild dolphins at close proximity to our boat which is a thrilling way to start the day. An afternoon visit to Muscat meant we tried out our bartering skills in the souk – A fantastic place to bag a bargain such as pashminas, incense, spices and other ornate gifts.

Our next 2 nights were spent high up in the Jamal Akhdar mountains, it’s a journey of approx. 2 hours from Muscat. This is an ideal opportunity to make a couple of fascinating stops en route. First to the stunning Grand Mosque, a beautiful example of modern Islamic architecture, the main prayer hall is especially beautiful, housing the largest chandelier in the world and weighing a phenomenal 8.5 tonnes.Next stop was Nizwa, the original capital of Oman. This historical city is famous for its impressive round castle fort, traditional souk and theatrical livestock market held every Friday.

We continued our journey along winding roads and amazing landscapes, spotting wild Donkeys and goats to Jabal Akhdar, the green jewel of the Al Hajjar Mountain range, sitting 2000 metres above sea level.

Our next 2 nights were spent at the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar resort . This resort is the highest 5* hotel in the Middle East and positioned on the curving edge of a great canyon with breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys below. The resort offers a particularly stunning vantage point known as Diana’s point, built in memory of the late Princess who visited the point in 1986 – a perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the sun set into the mountains.

This resort is ideal for explorers, the mountainous terrain and rural villages are ideal for hikers, bikers and adrenalin junkies. I was less adventurous and opted instead to make the most of the onsite facilities, soaking up the sun around the infinity pool. There is complimentary access to the onsite spa complete with sauna, steam room and hammam – a range of beauty treatments can also be purchased with daily early morning yoga also available.

On day five we checked out of out of the Anantara and made our way back down through the mountains to Muscat for our last night at the super cool Chedi Hotel, a vision of architectural symmetry which has a zen-like calming effect from the moment you arrive. The hotel is perfect for business and leisure travellers alike with 6 exquisite dining options, 3 swimming pools, one of which is the longest pool in the Middle East, a Balinese spa and 700-square-metre health club.

We dined in the aptly named “The Restaurant” for our last supper, this is a beautiful dining room complete with crystal chandeliers and live piano music. There are 4 open show kitchens offering Western, Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian fare, complemented by an award-winning wine list.

It was early to bed for a very early morning wakeup call at 4.30am the next morning for our short transfer to the airport and 8am departure back to Heathrow.

I have left Oman with lots of fantastic memories and a genuine respect and fondness for a country so diverse in scenery, I felt extremely safe and met some of the most welcoming people I have encountered in a very long time.

Top Tips for visiting Japan for the first time

Visiting Japan for the first time can be a bit daunting. There are a few things to consider before travelling to this iconic destination, such as customs and strict rules of etiquette that we as western travellers may not be used to.

Jan has been asked many times about travelling to Japan so has put together her top tips, along with a few words and sentences which will prove very useful when travelling.

#1 Always bow politely when bowed to.

#2 Always remove your shoes when entering a private home.

When visiting traditional accommodation such as a Ryokan or a temple/shrine, slippers are generally provided. This is not negotiable. If there are Tatami mats on the floor you must also take off your slippers. Tatami mats are usually found in historic buildings and temples but some restaurants have them also.

#3 Temple Conduct

Temples and shrines in Japan are mainly Buddhist or Shinto and are happy to welcome visitors – but please remember to dress respectfully. speak quietly and respect the areas that are cordoned off as many of them are still deemed religious sites.

There will always be a water source at the front of the shrine, please use the ladles provided to pour water over your hands and pour into one hand to rinse your mouth. You are expected to spit this out onto the ground.

#4 Public Transport

It is considered rude to talk on your mobile phone whilst travelling on public transport, so as not to disturb fellow travellers, speak quietly. If travelling by train, you may notice lines painted on the platforms to indicate where the doors will open. Always make sure you queue.

#5 It is considered rude to blow your nose in public.

#6 Eating out

If using chopsticks in a restaurant there are a few ‘do’s and don’ts’ to bear in mind. The main one is to never leave your chopsticks standing upright in a bowl of rice and to not use them as drumsticks as this is considered extremely rude.

If sharing a bottle of alcohol, such as Saki, never fill your own glass and always say ‘kam-pai’ before drinking.

Before eating your meal, it is polite to say “ itadaki-mas” which would be the same as saying ‘bon appetit’ . After your meal say “gochisō sama deshita” , this means thank you for the lovely meal and indicates to the waiter/waitress that you have finished and are ready to pay.

#7 Key Phrases

English is not as widely spoken in Japan as one may have thought, but you could meet someone who would like to practice their English with you. Why not try some of these more common phrases, hopefully impressing a Japanese person along the way…

Kudasai – Please

Arigatu – Thank you

Sumimasen – Excuse me or Sorry( This is probably the most useful word to learn. It can be used when asking a stranger a question, say it first.)

Hai – I’m satisfied and not necessarily yes.

Doku – Where?

Wa doku desu ka – Where is…?

Wakari masu – I understand

Wakari masen – I don’t understand

Wakari masu ka – do you understand?

Beyond Dubai

Almost everyone has heard of Dubai. They know about the bustling metropolis where each new building tries to outdo the other in terms of style and design. It’s no wonder this place is home to the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa and here at Destina we love it!

Dubai has it all, from Old World Souks and traditional Dhow boat rides at the creek to Atlantis the Palm with its huge aquarium & adrenaline pumping water park. Dubai even has one of the world’s largest indoor ski slopes. All in all, Dubai has something to offer for everyone, whether it’s an action-packed trip or a relaxing beach stay at one of the many super luxury hotels.

However, these are the well known sights that most visitors to Dubai experience, but there is a lot more that is often unseen. Senior Travel Consultant Dani recently visited Dubai and tells us of the hidden gems beyond the city walls and tall buildings…

Beyond Dubai

On a recent trip, I ventured past the magnificent skyscrapers which fill the skyline and headed towards to desert. Within less than an hour from Dubai I was greeted by the serenity of the orange sand dunes at every turn. Such a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the main city itself. Staying at the Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa nestled in a verdant palm oasis, deep within Dubai’s magical dune, I was overwhelmed when entering my Bedouin Suite. I couldn’t believe the size of the room, delicately filled with authentic Arabian furnishings, and a spacious bathroom featuring a walk-in shower & jacuzzi bath.

The highlight of the room was stepping out onto the private deck with loungers, infinity pool and stunning vistas of the surrounding desert. We were also given the option to indulge in a private dinner for the ultimate luxury experience.

From here you can explore the fascinating landscape on a Jeep excursion. To our surprise, whilst enjoying the sights of the desert by Jeep, we stopped to find a guide hosting champagne and strawberries in the desert. Here you can sip champagne whilst watching the sunset over the dunes – a fantastic way to end the excursion. This was a much more relaxing Desert trip than the usual Dune Safaris that many tourists book on.

What not to miss: Camel rides are also offered for those who want a truly authentic experience, a magical memory for all that will never be forgotten. Take a towering seat on the back of one of these biblical creatures and meander through the sand dunes for uninterrupted views of the endless desert landscape.

At Al Maha various activities can be pre-booked to get the most out of your desert stay. Start your day with an early morning Falconry display, take a thrilling jeep safari through the sand dunes, finished by a magical evening sundowner experience with a glass of bubbly in hand. This type of Holiday is a true get away from it all experience and a perfect escape from the buzz of Dubai.

If you prefer the beach

If you’re more of a beach bum and still want to get away from the city, you can take a 45-minute drive to Ajman. It’s less built up here but is still home to some truly spectacular hotels. We headed for the brand-new Oberoi Al Zorah Resort which certainly lived up to the limitless high standards that Oberoi are already known for.

To be greeted with a refreshing drink on arrival and given the keys to our rooms felt great and with our room situated down by the beach, a friendly member of staff drove us down by golf buggy- we felt like celebrities!

On entering the 2-bedroom villa we were amazed yet again at the sheer size of the rooms which had a perfect finish, decorated with contemporary funky decor. The villa featured 2 gigantic bedrooms, each with its own bathroom consisting of an indoor shower, an outdoor shower and freestanding bath. Further on past the dining room is a huge wrap-around private deck with cabanas, loungers & again a private infinity pool. This time with stunning views over the beach and the Arabian Gulf. A complete haven for relaxation in the year-round sunshine.

This was a place to relax away from all the hustle and activity of downtown Dubai or Jumeirah and yet only a short journey from the airport and city should you wish to do some sightseeing.

Another great point is that the slopes are quiet compared to its neighbouring countries which make it all the more attractive as you traverse down wide open pistes with trees surrounding you on either side making for the perfect snowboarding experience.

#3 The Charming Villages

A lot of ski resorts throughout Europe can be quite ugly with huge apartments blocks built there for convenience, however many of Italy’s resorts still retain their charm and character. Small villages filled with cobbled winding streets, pretty Italian buildings and a church spire to top it off……… After a day on the slopes, wandering around one of these pretty villages is an evening well spent.

#4 The Food

Everyone knows that Italy is famous for its delicious food and the ski resorts here are no different. The streets are filled with people outside small cafes with blankets on their laps sipping on the latest coffee trend. In the evening there are small cosy restaurants with log fires to entice you in and once inside you’ll be delighted by authentic Italian cuisine as well as dishes from across the globe. I visited a restaurant called Jour et Nuit in Cervinia which served a mouth-watering fillet steak cooked to perfection accompanied with dauphinoise potatoes smothered in cheese. Teamed with a carefully selected red wine produced locally in the region, this was the best meal I have ever had!

#5 The price

Compared to Switzerland, France & Austria, Italy boasts fantastic value for money. The holiday itself usually works out much lower in cost and this includes cheaper lift passes, tuition & equipment hire. We stayed in a chalet which included a 4-course evening meal plus unlimited red, white or rose wine which was excellent value. Eating out in your resort & in the mountain restaurants also proved to be excellent value for money compared to well-known resorts in France.

#6 The people

Italians are known for their friendly manner and charm. Everyone we spoke to from our chalet hosts, waiting staff in bars through to the guys operating the lifts welcomed us with open arms. A family we spoke to told us how great the ski teachers were with their kids, making everything fun as well as teaching them how to ski. Sometimes, the people and service can make a huge impression of a place and we were more than happy with every person we encountered.

Elaine’s favourite holiday destination has always been Greece, with one of her favourite Greek Islands being Skiathos.

With its picturesque harbour, cobbled streets in the old town, lush countryside and beautiful beaches you can’t beat Skiathos for a typically Greek experience. Whether you want a family holiday or romantic break for two, there is something for everyone.

Many people stay in Skiathos Town itself which is just minutes from the airport. It’s a quirky place, with clusters of restaurants and taverna’s situated not only around the harbour but within the streets and alleys that lead off.

When I visit Skiathos I like to travel around, exploring the beautiful island in detail and with it being such a small island it never takes long, and if you don’t fancy hiring a car it’s inexpensive to get around. If you wanted to use public transport then getting around has never been easier! With an excellent bus service running along the coast from Skiathos Town, it gives any keen explorer the opportunity to experience the many coves and beautiful beaches – From the famous Koukounaries to lesser known Mandraki you will be spoilt for choice with picturesque views.

Where to Stay

There is plenty of choice and variety when it comes to accommodation, from 5 Star hotels, beautiful waterside or rural villas to the selection of many small tavernas with rooms and apartments, there’s definitely something for everyone.

Where to Go

If lazing around on the beach or by the pool is not your thing then there are plenty of walking trails to explore. If you wanted to go further afield then visitors to Skiathos can make day excursions to nearby islands Skopelos (location for hit film Mamma Mia) and Alonissos. There’s horse riding activities, watersports, or if you prefer a walk taking in the spectacular views of the scenery, including the luxury yachts moored in the harbour and the fishermen bringing in their latest catch of the day.

Where to Eat

With an array of restaurants and bars to enjoy local dishes such as Stifado (a Greek stew), you will not be disappointed. Beautifully cooked fresh seafood and salads make evenings out a delight, especially when teamed with the excellent choice of local wines. For fine dining, The Windmill Restaurant in Skiathos Town is a special treat. For more reasonable fare, Skiathos Town has an array of places serving Souvlaki (marinated Greek chicken skewers) or Gyros (traditional Greek kebab served in a pita bread)

Where to hang out

Skiathos can be as quiet or as lively you choose, from laid back bars overlooking the sea (Goldfish Cocktail Bar is a must) through to cosmopolitan nightclubs (try the Kahlua Club) to let your hair down and enjoy the music.Skiathos offers both types of evening leaving the choice completely up to you.

All the above teamed with a beautiful summer climate, crystal clear seas and the sounds of the Greek Bouzouki in the background, Skiathos really is the ideal location for a perfect Greek island getaway.

Our MD, Kevin, recently visited South Africa and experienced the holiday of a lifetime in a stunning country with so much variety on offer, yet still at great value still despite the changes to exchange rates. Here he tells you more about his family’s visit to Cape Town, the Garden Route and a safari and gives some tips and recommendations on places to visit……

Our visit to South Africa was arranged by Destina and Rainbow Tours, which is part of the ITC Travel Group and one of Destina’s preferred partners. With so much local expertise they were the ideal choice to put together a bespoke holiday for our family and make it something that stood out as an exceptional experience. Our number 1 priority was a Safari, but combining it with the coast and beauty of the garden route along with the stunning city of Cape Town to round off our holiday.

Whichever way you do it you want to either start or end your holiday with a safari…….we chose it at the start, and that seemed to be what most people we met did. Despite the long journey from the UK to Port Elizabeth via Johannesburg, we forgot all our tiredness when we were met from our flight in Port Elizabeth and whisked away to Pumba Private Game Reserve about 75 minutes away. Here we were greeted by hot towels and drinks on arrival at the stunning Game Lodge before being shown to our beautiful thatched bungalow complete with private terrace and plunge pool overlooking a lake…….the perfect viewing point for some of Africa’s Big 5 and much more.

I’d highly recommend the Water Lodge at Pumba, a beautiful colonial style central lodge, with amazing service and superb food and drinks, all included in the cost of your stay and most importantly, twice daily game drives in the private reserve. Our ranger looked after us from start to finish for our 4 days stay where we viewed so many animals including the Big 5 at close quarters and in all types of terrain and light. Each evening we returned to a welcome G&T and chose our Dinner before retiring to the lounge to chat with friends we made during our stay. We will never forget the experience of Elephants coming right up to our jeep and the cheetahs chasing their prey by night or the pride of Lions and their cubs who walked right by our jeep. The time vanished yet it was also relaxing and the whole experience was one I’d recommend to anyone. Pumbia is stunning and you also have the benefit of being able to visit the sister camp, the Pumba Bush Lodge and enjoy lunch there.

We didn’t want to leave, however, there is so much to South Africa that more awaited us on our journey. Returning to Port Elizabeth we picked up a hire car and set off on our journey along the Garden Route and the Little Karoo. We stopped off in Plettenberg Bay, with its white sands and sweeping bay……. although it isn’t the most exciting town it was an ideal place to wind down after the early starts of the game drives and there are many beautiful places nearby including Knysna Town and Lagoon and the amazing Storms River Suspension Bridge at Tsitsikamma. We stayed in the Robberg Beach Lodge, a small but tastefully appointed spot overlooking the bay and sands and would highly recommend it.

Moving on we then journeyed inland again to visit Oudtshoorn, famous for its Ostrich Farms and Meerkat colonies. Staying at the De Zeekoe Guest Farm about 90 minutes inland from the coast, located near the river but surrounded by what can only be described as Amazon type scenery. We experienced beautiful sunsets there and the Farm serves up wonderful cuisine. Nearby you can visit the magnificent Kangoo Caves, Ostrich Farms (including the chance to ride on them!) and book an early morning Meerkat experience too. From there we then drove along the amazing Route 62 from Oudtshoorn which traverses some spectacular scenery and mountains with small townships and villages to stop off at for refreshments. The journey was a real experience and a highlight of our holiday and we would recommend a stop off at the Blue Cow at Barrydale, a super coffee shop with an outdoor terrace overlooking a lake full of fish waiting to be fed.

We continued onwards to stay in Stellenbosch, in the Cape wine regions, however during Whaling season I’d recommend you go to Hermanus, a lovely place on the coast with regular sea trips for whale watching and some magnificent seafood eateries.

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s University town and the centre of the wine growing region. With a New England style, it has some great individual shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants set within characterful buildings with clear Dutch influence in their architecture. Do visit the Botanical Gardens and the museum in the centre of town, but most importantly get booked onto a wine tour. We joined a half day tour with a great experienced guide, with just 5 of us visiting 3 private wine reserves for tasting sessions and accompanying cheeses and snacks before the opportunity to purchase the wine to ship home. The reserves were stunning and the vines and groves were surrounded by spectacular mountains. We stayed in a small Hotel, the River Manor, which was a collection of classic houses in central Stellenbosch set in lovely gardens and pools where breakfast and evening drinks would be served.

Finally, on to our last port of call, Cape Town. Driving around Cape Point first this ensured we arrived by the most scenic route possible. Stopping off for lunch in Hout Bay at the Mariners Wharf for Mussels and a bottle of Seadog local beer in the sunshine was a super way to get into Cape life. Driving on along the coast we passed the 3 Apostles and Camps Bay before entering the outskirts of Cape Town itself and our final stay at the Waterfront Apartments on the V&A Waterfront. After nearly 2 weeks in Hotels, we enjoyed the freedom of an apartment right in centre of the action in Cape Town. With parking on site, it was easy to travel around and we first went on a city tour to get our bearings before enjoying all that Cape Town offers – water-front, shopping, Table Mountain, sporting events, outdoor theatre and cinema, stunning scenery and lots more.

The weather in Cape Town can change rapidly so if you want to take the cable car up Table Mountain then watch the forecasts and make sure it’s clear, and go there as quick as you can! We were thwarted by high winds one day even though it was beautiful down in Cape Town itself. Whilst there, it’s also worth driving out to Cape Point and Boulders Bay to see the penguins and the tip of Africa, but avoid weekends and bank holidays as the crowds can spoil the experience!

So, our stay in South Africa drew to a close. A fantastic holiday and experience and somewhere we will never forget. A few tips I would give to anyone considering a trip to this beautiful country:

Weather – you do get 4 seasons in a day so always pack for all eventualities

Safari – the private game reserves, whilst maybe not as vast as Kruger, are close enough to combine with the garden route to give you the best of both worlds. Fly into Port Elizabeth and it’s just a short hop.

Eating out – Eating out was fantastic, with superb steaks and meat dishes including Ostrich to enjoy and new dishes to tempt us. The pricing was so reasonable and the service always great. Even with a drop in exchange rates, the price of meals and drinks was so low, even in Cape Town itself which on average is at least 25% lower than UK pricing.

Safety – we had been warned about the risk of crime, particularly for tourists, however, we never experienced any issues. You have to be sensible and it is not recommended to drive at night in some areas, but we always felt safe and comfortable.

Journey – it’s a long journey but worth it. The experience will make you forget any tiredness you feel!

Driving – it’s dead easy! Right Hand Drive and the roads are smooth, quiet and well maintained. Even in Cape Town itself, it was all very straightforward and logical.

Table Mountain – when the weather is clear go straight away and don’t hesitate. On this visit, we didn’t make it to the top of the mountain but having been many years ago, it’s something not to be missed.

Childcare is free from the age of 2, and the Kids clubs are grouped in age meaning everyone will take part in a variety of activities with children around their own age, whilst hopefully making some new friends along the way!

Different age groups have their own building, it has a full creche for the little ones to enjoy soft play and a teen room complete with everything a teenager requires, there’s even a soft drinks bar! Water based activities within the kid’s club are available too.

One of Elaine’s favourite cities is Dublin. With regular short flights at a great value from many UK airports, it is an ideal destination for a long weekend or mid week break to soak up entertainment, culture, history and more – and all with an Irish twist to it. Dublin is easy to get around and has plenty to offer visitors – the Guinness Storehouse and learn the history of the “black stuff”! Shop till you drop along Grafton Street, enjoy the fresh local produce and typical Irish dishes offered in the many bars and cafes. There are a wide variety of restaurants to choose from European to Asian and much more.

Take a trip on the Dart railway and have an afternoon at one of the pretty seaside towns which are just a short distance away. Wander around the beautiful Phoenix Park with its woodland walks, ornamental lakes, Victorian People’s Flower Gardens, Dublin Zoo, have lunch in the café or take a picnic. Visit the museums and art galleries or stroll around the city admiring the beautiful architecture.

In the evening take in a show or play at one of the many theatres or wander around the cobbled narrow streets of Temple Bar where you can enjoy traditional live music, singing and dancing.

It is also a great place to start if you wanted to do a longer holiday in Ireland, you can take your own car on the ferry from Liverpool or Holyhead – drive west to the wild Atlantic coast – visit Connemara National Park and down to the Cliffs of Moher. Further south takes you to the Ring of Kerry with its stunning scenery, on to Cork and Blarney Castle to kiss the stone! A little further east visit Waterford where you will find the amazing crystal glass.

Top 10 things to do when visiting Gibraltar

Being half Gibraltarian herself, Marketing Coordinator – Danielle Martinez is lucky to be able to visit family in Gibraltar (Gib) at least once a year. Its a short 3-hour flight taking you directly into Gibraltar Airport which was voted 4th in ‘Most Scenic Airport Landing 2017’

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the Southern tip of Spain with the Gibraltar Strait separating Morocco from the tip (Europa Point). Home to just over 32 thousand people in a 6.8km area, the sights of Gibraltar can be visited within 48 hours which makes it a perfect weekend break! Featured in the James Bond film “The Living Daylights” and place of marriage for Yoko Ono and John Lennon, Gib has plenty to see and do!

Here Danielle gives you her top places to visit in Gibraltar…

#1 The Rock of Gibraltar

Most of the Upper Rock is covered by a nature reserve, home to around 300 Barbary Macaques which you can indeed visit. Surrounded by its own micro climate the rock generally ends and starts the day with a large cloud covering the entire top of the rock. This is locally known as the “Levante” and can be quite a daunting sight for anyone visiting for the first time as the cloud gives the impression that a dull stormy day will occur…… on the contrary! Once the sun has burnt off the Levante by mid morning you will be guaranteed a bright sunny day!

#2 Visit the Barbary Macaques

Once at the top of the Rock you can visit the Barbary Macaques! It’s easy to get there either by cable car ride to the top or through an organised trip via mini bus. The monkeys are cheeky little things, so you will need to keep your belongings somewhere safe.

#3 St Michael’s Cave

St Michael’s Cave is split into two (Upper and Lower) and has interested visitors to Gibraltar ever since the days of the Romans.

Lower St Michael’s Cave was only discovered in 1942, the cavern of which has extraordinary beauty featuring grey and red stalactite columns. The Cathedral Cave is open to visitors and makes a unique auditorium for intimate concerts, ballet and drama productions. It has been in use as a theatre since the early sixties and has a capacity of 600.

#4 Main Street Shopping

Gibraltar welcomes millions of tourists every year, many of whom will head to Main Street for a spot of shopping! Home to well-known brands such as Pandora, TopShop, Marks and Spencers as well as local stores, Main Street is the centre of Gibraltar’s commercial district and the scene of some of the best value shopping on the Mediterranean. Gibraltar is a VAT free jurisdiction so goods sold in Gibraltar offer the best value. The currency is the Gibraltar Pound, equivalent to Sterling, so there is no costly currency conversion for visitors from the United Kingdom.

#5 Eat and Drink

My favourite thing to do when I visit Gibraltar is to visit the many restaurants, bars and eateries it has to offer. There are two areas in which you can enjoy a delicious evening meal, Casemates Square, and my personal choice, Ocean Village. Situated on the Marina, Ocean Village is home to the world’s first 5* anchored super-yacht hotel and some of the most affluent apartments. In this area, you will find the best restaurants and bars, from traditional Mediterranean cuisine to Cuban, Indian and more. For a quiet coffee shop vibe, Sacarellos just off the Main Street shopping area in “Irish Town” provides the perfect setting to enjoy a welcome rest from shopping to indulge in their award winning coffee and delicious cakes!

#6 Casinos

If a flutter is your thing, then there are two main casinos in Gibraltar to choose from:

Admiral Casino

If you’re a keen aviationist then at Eastern Beach you can sunbathe and watch the airplanes fly onto the runway from a distance too!

#8 La Linea Fair

Technically not in Gibraltar but a short 5-10 minute walk from the Gibraltarian Border (remember to take your passport to cross the border), popularly known as “La Salvaora” and “La Velada”, La Línea Fair is the main festivity in the town. Running normally from 14th July 2017 – 23rd July 2017 it’s home to more than 30 marquees set up in the fairground with good music, dancing, and food including some of the best Churros I have ever tasted!

#9 Excursions

Gibraltar is the perfect base from which to explore nearby Spain (Marbella, Torremolinos and Benalmadena are within short driving distances) and Morocco. Head down to Main Street to see a Tours representative based along the pavements to organise your trip for a small fee. A short ferry crossing will take you to Morocco where you can buy spices and haggle over bargains in the souk, adding up to making Gibraltar an even more attractive destination.

#10 MTV Gibraltar Calling Festival

One for the music lovers, MTV brings some of the biggest names in the music industry to rock around the rock!

Running every September the festival is home to a variety of acts this year such as Bananarama, Go West, Kaiser Chiefs, Craig David, Bastille and even The Village People!

So there you have it! The possibilities are endless when it comes to things to do in Gibraltar. April’s destination of the month is the unique island archipelago that’s all things to all people. Technically Spanish but within striking distance of north-west Africa, it’s impossible to tire of these vastly varied holiday hotspots. From big-hitter Tenerife to the hidden gem islands of La Gomera and El Hierro, we look at what makes the Canary Islands deserving holiday favourites.

Why Go

The Canary Islands are one of the few short haul destinations where you can pretty much guarantee good weather in April – with warm, sunny days, little rainfall and average highs of around 24 degrees. This makes them an excellent choice for an Easter escape, whether that’s a Bank Holiday break or a two week family holiday. Each island has its own distinct personality, with fun attractions for kids, cultured capitals, buzzing resorts and remote hideaways. What really sets the Canary Islands apart, however, is the spectacular landscapes they boast, from volcanic craters, desert dunes, pine forests and craggy mountains, to sandy beaches ranging from jet black to talcum-powder white.

Where To Go

#1 Tenerife

The largest and most popular of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is a real crown-pleaser with something for everyone. The upmarket resort of Costa Adeje offers boutique shopping, cocktail bars and luxury hotels, while Playa de las Americas is the Canaries’ let-your-hair-down lively resort. The capital, Santa Cruz, combines beach and city break, and the vast Mount Teide National Park is a must for active travellers who want to conquer the island’s volcanic heart. #2 Fuerteventura

Probably the most unspoilt of the four larger islands, Fuerteventura boasts beautiful pale-sand beaches along its east coast from Corralejo in the north to Jandia, Costa Calma and Morro Jable in the south. Strong winds make it a haven for surfers and watersports enthusiasts, while a scenic drive through the desert-like centre will take you past tiny hamlets, basalt hills and arid plains that stretch for miles.

#3 Gran Canaria

This island is known for being a ‘continent in miniature’ with landscapes varying wildly from its leafy north to its sandy south – with towering mountains sandwiched in the middle. Maspalomas on the south coast draws crowds for its incredible rolling sand dunes, with near neighbours Playa del Ingles and Meloneras basking in their reflected glory. At the opposite end of the island, capital city Las Palmas is a colourful, cosmopolitan culture hub sitting on a swathe of sandy beach.

#4 Lanzarote

Lanzarote attracts a family crowd to resorts like lively Puerto del Carmen and the more relaxed, sophisticated Playa Blanca. Between them sits pretty Puerto Calero, which boasts a smart marina and an exclusive feel. Of course, the island’s huge Timanfaya National Park makes it an exciting prospect for hikers and explorers. While lovers of art and architecture will be charmed by the work of local artist, César Manrique, which is integrated into the island landscape – including the Mirador del Rio viewpoint carved into the Risco de Famara cliffs on the northern coastline.

#5 La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro

While each island has its quieter spots, if you’re looking for a truly off the beaten track Canaries experience you should consider La Palma (known locally as ‘the pretty island’), La Gomera or El Hierro. These smaller islands are the least visited, and so it follows that they’re less tarnished by tourism. Choose one of this tiny trio, and you’ll switch sprawling resorts for traditional guest houses, and can spend your holiday roaming the unspoilt landscapes, charming towns, hiking trails and pretty parks.

What To Do

#1 Brave the Volcanoes

The Canary Islands are dotted with volcanoes which have created unique landscapes ripe for exploration. Mount Teide in Tenerife is the third highest in the world and the national park that surrounds it has an expansive network of trails for visitors to tackle. It’s a similar story on Lanzarote, where the Timanfaya National Park boasts an almost lunar-like cratered landscape that can be tackled on foot, on a coach tour or even on camel back!

#2 Find your Favourite Beach

The Canary Islands are a beach lover’s paradise, with a mix of soft white sands, dramatic black sand beaches and even golden sands shipped in from the Sahara. The Fuerteventura coastline is known for having the best beaches in the entire Canaries archipelago, including endless soft sand stretches at popular Corralejo and the resorts lined-up along the island’s southernmost finger. For lesser known beaches with gleaming white sands and black rock lava lagoons, head to El Cotillo and Los Lagos in the north-west. On Tenerife, the Saharan-sand Playa de las Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz is overlooked by a pretty hillside fishing village and the soaring Anaga mountains, while the wave-like sand dunes at Maspalomas are a must see in Gran Canaria.

#3 Meet the Animals

There are some fantastic animal attractions on the larger Canary Islands, which offer great days out for all ages. At popular Loro Parque in Tenerife, you can see everything from dolphins and orcas to white tigers and, of course, thousands of colourful parrots (or ‘loros’). At Palmitos Park in Gran Canaria, you can swim with dolphins, walk through the biggest butterfly house in Europe and watch the orang-utans on Primates Island. And the Rancho Texas Animal Park in Lanzarote combines animal interactions and shows with a lovely pool.

#4 Island Hop

Why limit yourself to just one Canary Island when you can hop between them? All seven main islands are connected by ferry services, with some crossings – Lanzarote to Fuerteventura, and Tenerife to La Gomera or Gran Canaria, for example – taking under an hour. If you wish to travel between islands that aren’t immediate neighbours, air travel may be quicker and more convenient. It’s also technically the hottest city in the world, thanks to steady year-round highs, and proudly boasts the world’s tallest golden Buddha, in the temple of Wat Traimit. Bargain hunters will love the biggest outdoor market in the world, the Chatuchak Weekend Market, which has over 15,000 stalls. And all that browsing should work up an appetite worthy of one of the largest restaurants in the world, the Chinese-themed Royal Dragon Restaurant, where staff speed around on roller skates to serve up to 5,000 customers.

Described as the city with the world record for being the city with the most world records, our number one spot has to go to Dubai. In this mesmerising Middle Eastern city, you can soar to the top of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, to look out from the world’s highest observation deck. You can also visit – or stay on – the world’s largest fully functioning human-made island, the Palm Jumeirah, which is so large it is visible from space, and shop in the world’s biggest mall, the Dubai Mall, which covers an area equal to 200 football pitches!
